The exploitation of the past is omnipresent. Hardly a genre of former days can escape its reissue in our times. A young trio from England named Kitty, Daisy & Lewis for instance getting all into petticoats, grease and country sounds of the 50s where you can even hear the antique Vinyl-rasping on the medium. Or the current – and in my opinion fantastic – video of the song “You belong” from Hercules and Love Affaire is giving the ‘fierceness’ of the 80s a renaissance, including vogueing models and transsexual singers.
Also the Southern Rock movement of the 70s is getting back on stage with an American band called Year Long Disaster. The 3 guys – not adverse to psychedelic drugs, as the band info tells – playing fundamental Rock with long lasting guitar soli and having an artwork on their debut album which is definitely referring to the Rocker’s era back in time.
Last Friday we were able to join the band on their trip through the years, playing at the Luxor in Cologne. The audience was unexpectedly young and mixed, means, I was pretty much sure the crowd would be mainly male, over their 40s and long-haired. However, even if the crowd didn’t look like real Rock n Rollers, they definitely moved like those. A repeating head banging with a more lethargic than enthusiastic step forward and back again, forward and back again…
The band instead gave everything and the time machine was running wild and rocking as loud as it can. The singing of Daniel Davies (son of Dave Davies of the Kinks) fits perfectly into the long row of screaming rock legends like ZZTop’s Billy Gibbons or Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and the bassist (Rich Mullins) would probably be king in Limbo dancing because he’s able to stand in the rocker’s pose – legs widely spread – like forever!
People had fun listening to the sound which is never going to be out of fashion, because it’s honest and never only a reissue…

Picture by Jesse Benjamin | | | | SIGUR RÒS 11.08.08 at Palladium, Cologne
To be honest, Sigur Ros was kind of like a blank slate to me (Shush! all you enthusiastic music aficionados who are often showing a lack of tolerance towards normal people - which I am definitely…maybe…). Every time someone’s standing in front of me, getting those big and shiny eyes, when he/she was telling me about this “absolutely innovative band from Iceland who are creating different worlds full of pixies and hobgoblins with their music – com’on I will show you a video on youtube, you’ll see...”, I just hummed understandingly and went away. I really don’t know why I always avoided this experience so much, being all ignorant and showing a lack of tolerance… (oops, the normal me became a freak!).
However, shame on me, especially after the experience I blessedly could be a part of yesterday. Sigur Ros live is, what all the people tell you about: moving, bewitching, overwhelming … I felt like crying and laughing at the same time. But that’s not even astonishing, listening to the voice of Jón Þór Birgisson for the first time. It scared me a bit until I recognized what rich diversity this guy’s voice has (without being an eunuch – or is he?). A little Freddy Mercury in “elves-country”…
The concert had everything a good northern fairytale needs: nice pixies playing the strings, men in white forming a brass marching band, snow falling from heaven, a cryptical language spoken by Puck, the main character and – most important – an excited audience with good and happy people who were begging the characters to stay so much, that they came back and back again, until the candle faded out and the night kissed everyone into sleep. Hush hush under the blankets!

| | | | JAGUAR LOVE 18.06.2008 at LUXOR Club / Cologne - Support: Man vs Nature
"Bring all your friends!", the Tourmanager told us, afraid that the new band with familiar faces may not get the audience they deserve. Because JAGUAR LOVE are vocalist/pianist Johnny Whitney and guitarist/bassist Cody Votolato from the BLOOD BROTHERS along with keyboardist/bassist/drummer Jay Clark from PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES.
We came willingly and so did a noticeable bunch of music enthusiasts.
Interesting but kind of scary opener of the evening were a harlequin masked german trio called MAN VS NATURE, making weird moves to their experimental but catchy beats. They should advice parents to keep away their kids, avoiding nightmares after joining a show of them! Man, I truly feared Nature... It's been this kind of phenomenon, watching something scary but being unable to keep your eyes off!
But being acclimatized once, the sounds conquers the eyes and everything's fine in the end. Kind of Urlaub in Polen goes Extasy after escaping a lunatic asylum.
"Okay kids, it's JAGUAR LOVE time! You can come back to stage, put in your earplugs and enjoy an energetic hour of passionate rock accompagnied by a distinctive voice you'll never forget!" Sometimes you wonder, how these lank guys could possibly create such a thick wall of sounds. But they can and they do it without decline. Fascinating, just like The Blood Brothers were back then, but with more spirit in the sounds and manifold in the melodies.
I think, we will see JAGUAR LOVE more often in the future and hopefully more enduring than the Blood Brothers. They seem to build their music onto a very smooth and positive mood.
In this spirit: Good night folks, sleep tight and dream about friendly cats, not white faced monkeys...

Foto by Jesse Benjamin | | | | ...TRAIL OF DEAD March 2005, Club Abart in Zürich, Switzerland
Ever seen ...and you will know us by the trail of dead ??? then you'll feel good reading this! how can a band combine so much energy, tense feelings, sometimes humour to keep it all under control, fine tuning and such a huge sense of melody and arrangement!? I'm so sorry about the lack of sharpness (the quality is even worse than my english this time!) but how do you want to be a few meters from the stage and taking quietly a picture of such a tornado. Tornado?... hurricane!! (which one is bigger by the way?.....) anyway, you know how Jason and Conrad like to alternate drums/guitar/singing during the show and how furious the drumkit gets beaten, well this tour featured a second drummer, so you have two drums on stage! can you believe it?
Abart is not the best sounding place I've ever been (sorry guys!), but the band made it in an amazing way to turn this show into something memorable, very smart! even better than smart when you think that the show was supposed to take place in a bigger hall but got moved because the pre-sales were not satisfying enough (the Abart got immediatly sold out though, about 500 capacity). "Worlds Apart" is one of the most important release this year, and ....Trail of Dead is one of the most important band of our generation!
-the lo-fi passenger- | | | | QOTSA QUIZ QOTSA Promo Tour - Quiz
WE HAVE A WINNER and we would like to congratulate Gabriel from Wien (Austria). Josh's new guitar is a MATON Betty Blue indeed. Gabriel, we'll take directly contact with you and here above is the little "autogram" you will receive with the TS of your choice. Thanks to all taking part of the game! we'll do it again... stay tuned!
| | | | QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE February 2005 - Queens of the stone Age in Paris Trabendo, France
A cocktail of exhausting promo with a lot of plane, train, nightliner, taxi... mild weather in Milan, cold and dry in Amsterdam, cold and wet in London, snow in Paris made the 10th day of this little tour a terrible one! Josh got seriously sick already two days before, tonite he thought it would be ok, the worst was behind and that a great show would be the best medication. Unfortunatly.... well, you already know. We all hope he recovers soon (soon will start the US tour!). He feels sorry for the audience in Paris who didn't see the best Queens performance of all times and for the cancelled shows of course. We were having a good time the next day in the COTTAGE ELYSEE (great bar/brasserie next to the Champs Elysees) when we heard the news from tour manager. From that point, a tour splits in all directions, everyone gets back to his country (US, UK, Germany, Holland.....) and it will all get back together for the next one... stronger than ever!

| | | | QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE February 2005 - Queens of the Stone Age in Amsterdam Paradiso, Netherlands
Second date of the promo tour in the beautiful Paradiso. This time, we would like to concentrate on Sir Lanegan. The show started directly with "Song for the Dead" and the crowd was immediatly hot! Mark was logically from the beginning on stage, Queens complete from the start..... and he doesn't only sing but also plays some keys on few songs! who said before he wouldn't be part of the band anymore?!!?... he's now "double-employed". -the lofi passenger- | | | | QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE February 2005 - Queens of the Stone Age in Milan Transilvania, Italy
"Lullabies to Paralyze" is already knocking at our doors and Qotsa are currently on a small promotion tour across Europe. Josh is presenting our old continent his new songs and new bassman: Dan Druff, who used to work as a tech on several recordings. He's somehow always been part of family so, no need to talk about "integration"!!!! ....and there's one more thing new: Josh's guitar. We asked our lo-fi passenger what kind of guitar it is but the idiot had no idea. So we leave it to instrument freaks who will stand on the first row, hopefully one of them will mail us the right charateristics and the first right answer (after we check with Josh personally!!) wins a TS... ok? good luck!

| | | | NO MEANS NO March 2004 - NoMeansNo in Stuttgart, Germany.
Now, to answer that question in everybody's mouth: NoMeansNo are 25 years old people that have made music for 25 years! They tour Europe for about the 16th time, and you can feel their music is more actual than ever, perfect time to bring out "The People's Choice", compiled cd by fans themselves. NoMeansNo is a democratic band, guitar, bass and drums, from left to right on stage, all in front. Tom, Rob and John are reviewing more than 15 years of NMN on this tour, playing a fluid set, powerfull and make you realise that many of those famous punk tunes you know from "somewhere" are actually from them! NoMeansNo keep bringing fresh air in the "alternative punk scene", now needed more than ever!!! | | | |
| | | | EAGLES OF DEATH METAL February 2004: Eagles of Death Metal at Madame JoJos, London.
In the middle of Soho, stuck between sexshops and erotic libraries, the "cabaret-club" is a well chosen place for Jesse "JDEVIL", sexiest rock n roll moustache on earth!
That is where you're supposed to be that day, a very limited capacity club, last european show for a while, cosy atmosphere, Josh Homme on drums, Tim from Millionaire on the second guitar....... One of the newest band, one of the most awaited release since months, posponed several times but at last, "Peace, Love & Death Metal" will be available around march 24th. It is rock n roll with no tradition, straight sexy entertainment! Many will get to love death Metal. -the lofi passenger- | | | | BOLOGNA 2003 (months later...) What is a little Queen from the stone age doing when the big monster is having a rest??... is he getting bored? "no".... goes on vacation? "...depends what you mean with vacation!... actually no!".... The little Queen is raising other little monsters like Mondo Generator, Eagles Of Death Metal, Desert Sessions.
So the newcomer ENEMY is now added to the list. New poject by Troy Van Leuwen, album is finished and is about to be released.
And what is a little Queen doing with his little new monster? he's going tour, right! ....with who? with another little Queen of course and he's called Mark Lanegan!...
The Estragon is packed! filled to the wardrobe, side doors are open, you need 10mn to reach the barand get a cool drink.... but everybody is just happy to discover Troy's new project and at last, hear the magic voice of Mark (let's say "magic" because ... well, I don't know... how do you want to describe it? ).
For those who missed that tour, you'll have another chance to hear/see him in 2004 again.
the lo-fi passenger | | | | BOLOGNA 2003 Independent Summer Festival. The QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and TURBONEGRO get to meet again, 2 months after touring the US together. The two bands don't just respect each other, they turned to become great friends. It is not impossible that more projects might unite them again in a near future.... Turbojugends, fans around the world: keep your eyes and mind open! Anyway, Bologna was great that day, the sun was high in the sky, the place is surrounded by some kind of "nature-arena" which makes it cosy, almost private, and more than 10.000 people come to see the new gladiators of rock: WHITE STRIPES, TURBONEGRO, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, AUDIOSLAVE. Many high points that day.... like when Nick appeared during the TURBONEGRO set, the italian went:"woah, seems this band is not just some norwegian act invited to fill the day, those "deathpunks" are proving their carismatic attitude!!" (I can't promise this is exactly what I heard, no parla italiano, sorry! but this is what you could read in their azur eyes). Well, in the end, the two bands ended up in the same hotel, spent a rock night, so late and loud that Paul "Pamparius" now carries a scar across his forehead.....
